Symptoms and treatment of seborrheic dermatitis on the head
Recently, I had the bad luck to get sick with mixed seborrheic dermatitis, on the face and head. I wondered what it was, and why it occurs in people. Is it contaminated, does it affect the human body? What drugs can be used? Is it possible to prevent the formation of this infection? I asked my acquaintances who had been ill with it, searched for information on the Internet. That’s what I’ve learned.
Seborrheic dermatitis refers to inflammation of the sebaceous glands, with the manifestation of epidermis detachment, the release of oil on the face, head, and body.
The disease itself is not life-threatening, it just brings inconvenience due to its effects on human appearance. The first sign is the formation of dandruff, then the hair quickly becomes dirty, oily, the head begins to itch, the hair splits and starts to fall out. This is caused by a Malassezia fungus. Children and people with diabetes are most susceptible to seborrhea. In children, immunity has not yet formed, and in diabetics, it is greatly weakened.
In the photo, you can see seborrheic dermatitis of a child in infancy, when it is just beginning to get used to the world around it. It is a reaction to the stimulating effects of the mother’s hormones.
When immunity is weakened, the sebaceous glands malfunction, the protective barriers weaken, due to which bacteria multiply and spread. As a result, there are various complications.
Types of seborrheic dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis on the head, like any dermatitis, has several types:
- The dry one is typical for children. Dry skin, brittle hair are among the symptoms.
- Oily one.
- Thick type is inherent in the male sex, liquid one in females.
- Mixed form.
The first two types appear simultaneously. For example, the hair is oily, but on the borders, you can observe dryness, flaking. My case was different. At first, I just treated dandruff with hair loss, washed my head with Nizoral. When the month of treatment expired, I stopped using it, as it did not help. And a week later, after the cessation of washing my hair with this shampoo, my forehead and nose began to peel off; scabs on my head and face appeared. In general, it was terrible.
Therefore, it is not necessary to run after shampoos, creams for self-treatment at the first symptoms. First, pay attention to your chronic diseases or diet. Chronic diseases, external irritants or allergens can cause this attack. Diet is almost the most important thing in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. Avoid different types of spices, reduce the fatty dishes, reduce the amount of sugar consumed, exclude allergenic products. Personally, this was enough for me.
Of course, a single diet will not help. Hygiene is just as important. Maybe there are agents used that are not suitable for the type of skin and hair. Rough means or frequent use of a hairdryer, as well as other heating appliances for laying, can cause problems.
If everything is in order with hygiene, and the strict diet can’t help you, go to the clinic. There they will examine you, take tests, make a diagnosis, if necessary, prescribe additional tests.
The tests are simple. Blood is taken for sugar level analysis. For a more accurate diagnosis, an additional examination may be appointed. More blood is needed to check the hormones. Procedures of bacteriological seeding, scraping scales can be conducted as well. I had to pass all these tests because I could not determine the cause. But it turned out that the cause lied in contraceptives and oilseeds; in sharp allergy to these products. After establishing an accurate diagnosis, an appropriate treatment is prescribed.
Establishing an accurate diagnosis is very important because there are similar diseases. Psoriasis, for example, is characterized by moderate itching. Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction, for example, to clothes like my son had. It does not happen on the folds of skin.
How to recognize seborrheic dermatitis on the head?
Dead cells of the epidermis fall off on the shoulders if you slightly shake your head. Hair quickly becomes dirty, itchy, skin is dry, hair falls out. These are the most common symptoms of a prolonged, uncomplicated form of seborrhea.
During normal operation of the sebaceous glands, the epidermis is updated monthly. If the activity of bacteria is increased, the process is accelerated, dead particles do not have time to get rid of excess moisture. Therefore, they remain on the skin, accumulate in layers, forming crusts. That’s where the desire to scratch the head comes from.
Hair falls out gradually, with huge packs. With improper treatment, this can lead to baldness.
All these are the consequences of the development of microorganisms living in our skin, provoking a violation of protective functions. Before starting treatment, find out the cause of the failure in the body. Try to eliminate it. For example, I have problems with my stomach. I’ve got used to it so much that I didn’t even notice the first signs of changes in his work until severe pain began. In addition, I take hormonal contraceptives. After visiting the clinic, I began taking Omeprazole 1 time a day in the morning before a meal. I stopped taking birth control pills as well. My diet was not so strict, I’ve reduced sweet, haven’t eaten something that contains allergens and spices. After five days, there were no signs of illness on the forehead, the head began to itch less, it became less polluted. Also, it has been necessary to wash the head often, because several hours after washing the layer of oil would be formed again. As treatment began, I began to wash my hair once every two days.
Causes of hair loss:
- Disruption of the digestive and endocrine systems.
- Lack of vitamins contributes to metabolic disorders.
- Chronic diseases.
- Heat treatment, hair coloring, the use of varnishes.
- Weak immunity.
Treatment of seborrheic dermatitis on the head
The struggle against this disease consists of 2 parts: the elimination of the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis and the improvement of the work of the organ that caused this reaction.
All appointments depend on the type of dermatitis. To prevent the active actions of Malassezia, you need to apply shampoos, which include ketoconazole or piriton. These are Sebazole and Nizoral shampoos.
A zinc paste, tar soap are great antiseptics against seborrheic dermatitis on the head. Means which are drying the skin can improve the sebaceous glands. For example, a one-percent paste of Sulsenum can be used both in treatment and for prevention of this ailment.
Also, you will need anti-allergic pills, such as Loratadine and others. Sometimes, with complications, mixed medications containing hormones and antifungal substances are prescribed.
Suitable treatment combinations will help you to quickly get rid of the disease.
Who can help?
If any symptom occurs, you should go to a dermatologist. He will examine you, give recommendations for tests, write out a prescription and, if necessary, send you for consultation to other specialists (an endocrinologist, a gastroenterologist or a therapist).
Recovery will take time, in different ways for each case. No need to worry if there is no result in the first days. And if there is deterioration, stop taking the means, immediately go to the doctor for a new appointment.
Anti-allergenic means can relieve irritation, swelling. Most commonly, they are discharged in pills. Eat them for no more than two weeks. Clemastine, Cetirizine, Gluconic acid calcium salt, Sodium thiosulfate are among this group. For mild and moderate manifestations, ointments and shampoos are prescribed. For severe complications, clotrimazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole can be used.
Hormonal creams Beclometasone, Hydrocortisone are often prescribed with antifungal means, like Clotrimazole or alcoholic solutions with acids. In order to beat down the bactericidal infection antibiotics tetracycline, metronidazole can be used.
Ways to restore hair
Treatment is prescribed taking into account the physiology of each patient individually.
- Clean your hairbrush, treat it with antiseptic regularly.
- Stop drinking, quit smoking.
- Apply proper nutrition.
- Избежание стрессов.
- Avoid stresses.
- Less use of hair irons, as well as other heating devices.
- Cosmetics must match the type of skin, hair.
If you follow these tips on a daily basis, you may never be beaten by this disease. In addition to general therapy, there are two more options for hair restoration. You can be prescribed to use hormone pills, such as Spironolactone, Minoxidil, Proscar. Also, surgical transplantation of the skin can be conducted, when damaged hair follicles are replaced with healthy ones. In the case of medication treatment, it is necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle. And still, the result will have to wait for a long time.
What kind of shampoos will help with seborrheic dermatitis?
There are a lot of shampoos on the market, but they also need to be chosen correctly. In addition to Nizoral, there are a few shampoos that really help:
- Shampoo with zinc pyrithione. Lather your head and wash off after three or five minutes.
- Ketoconazole shampoos prevent the development of fungus, normalize gland function. Use it like a regular shampoo, rinse with a strong stream of warm water.
- Keto plus does not allow the fungus to multiply, relieves irritation. Hold the foam for 5 minutes, then rinse.
- Sulsena is an antifungal shampoo, that dries the skin. Do not wash off the foam for three minutes.
We must not forget about chronic diseases.
You can take Immunol, Imunofan to improve immunity.
Linex is a medication from the probiotic group, which also can help in cases of seborrheic dermatitis on the head. Omeprazole is a strong anti-ulcer remedy.
Hormones play the main role in the body. Adjust the hormonal level with the contraceptive pills with estrogen content (for example, Diane, Yasmin, Minisiston).
Traditional medicine tips
Broths can be used to process the head, or instead of the air conditioner. It should consist of herbs and other natural ingredients. You can simply cook a decoction of chamomile, nettle, and burdock. After each shampooing process the hair with obtained broth. I’ve used this particular decoction personally.
Sage with honey
The mass is rubbed into the scalp. It moisturizes the skin, stops the head itching.
Oak bark is mixed with a spoon of honey. Apply the mass for half an hour, after washing your hair.
A mixture of chamomile, calendula, and plantain
It is better to use with bandages. This mix heals, soothes the skin well. Apply it for half an hour.
Tincture of walnut shells
Use before taking a shower or bath. Walnut shells are mixed with aloe and olive oil. Apply to wet hair half an hour before you wash your hair.
Castor oil with calendula
Apply the tincture with the brush for a couple of hours before washing your head.
Use a brush for dyeing hair before bedtime to apply the mass, and in the morning wipe the treated areas with an alcohol-containing liquid.
Broths and tinctures do not have a long shelf life, so you have to cook the fresh ones regularly.
Prevention of seborrheic dermatitis formed on the head has certain rules:
- Wash your hair not more than three times a week.
- Wipe your head only with a soft towel.
- Do not use hair brushes, hairpins of other people.
I already wrote about diet, it must be observed at least partially. Normalized nutrition improves the bowels functions, therefore, improves the skin condition. After all, our skin is in some way an intestinal mirror.
Diet eliminates the ingress of allergens in the body, removes toxins, provide vitamins, improve digestion. Therefore, at least for a while, exclude fatty foods, spicy foods, spices, reduce eating sweets, pickles and alcohol. But in general, a lot of things cannot be on a diet from doctors, such as fat meat, pasta, semolina, potatoes, eggs, jelly, canned food, citrus, honey, salty, spicy food.
Dietary meat, pike, hake, cabbage, cucumbers, asparagus, pears, apples, cherries, gooseberries, dairy products, buckwheat, barley, oatmeal, herbal tea, not sweet compotes, fruit drinks and mineral water without gases are on the list of the permitted products. You’ll need vitamins as well, from A, E, B groups. It is necessary not only to exclude harmful products but also to prepare the dish correctly. The best options are stewing, baking, steaming and grilling.
For children, the diet is slightly different. My daughter spends a lot of time in the garden. For some reason, yellow crusts on her head have been formed. There was no adhere to a special diet, we only excluded sweets, changed them for fruits and vegetables. For an accurate diet for a child, you need to consult a doctor. He’ll take age into account, as well as causes and factors, physical condition, weight, etc.
Preventing the disease will help to avoid it, eliminate its recurrence. To do so, follow the next steps:
- Conduct a strict diet.
- Do not overwork and avoid stress.
- Prevention of chronic diseases.
- Normal sleep.
- Walking on the fresh air.
- Proper skin and hair care.
By following the recommendations of the doctor, you can achieve rapid recovery. Many believe that with seborrheic dermatitis on the head and face the Sinaflan cream will help. It’s not like that at all. When I asked the doctor about it, he almost shouted that it could not be used. Yes, it will relieve some of the symptoms, but as soon as you stop using this ointment, everything will resume and maybe even worsening. Be attentive to your health, listen to the body and conduct the treatment in time. Look at the photo below, this is what self-treatment and neglect of visiting the doctor and his recommendations can lead to.
